Worship Debrief – 10/4-5

Helping others; being salt of the earth and light of the world; that verse that we always hear Sue Steege recite at a baptism – all were part of this weekend’s worship services (and there was no baptism this week!). After several weeks of looking at those things that can hinder our walk with Christ, we got to take a break and look at our God-given directive to help others get past these things as well.

Saturday, 10/04 – 7:00pm:

  • Tried out Jami Smith’s song “Salt and Light” with the congregation tonight. They seemed to enjoy the song, but musically it was much better on Sunday with the full band!
  • The congregation seemed subdued, but there was a good number and they were into the worship.
  • This is such a casual service that I struggle to find stuff to write about it. Is that good or bad?

Sunday, 10/05 – 11:15am:

  • “Salt and Light” was very fun this morning with the full band!
  • “Amazing Grace” appeared to have some confusion. The third time through was supposed to be instrumental, but people just kept singing. It’s a good problem to have – it means people are into the worship! I’ve made a mental note to have a slide added that read “Instrumental” when we do that again (or maybe I’ll just have a blank one)
  • Sound seemed weird to me…could be the changes in the weather. Little known fact: weather can affect the sound in church. Today was colder, so the air was dryer and allowed sound to move more freely. Imagine a snow covered, winter morning and how well sound carries in that environment. Now imagine a hot summer morning…sound doesn’t carry as well. Hmm…
  • Got some feedback on the music played during confession. I was told (and thought myself, today) it was too loud and was distracting. I like the concept, if it can be done right. Any feedback on this? Can a musical background to the confession work, or should it be silent?

Looking forward to hearing from you and getting your feedback. Thanks in advance – the comments are much appreciated.

  1. Sue – I love getting feedback, but am still learning how to ask for it (at least in a way I’m comfortable with). Thanks so much for the encouragement!!!

  2. Thanks to all of you. This is great stuff!!! I’ll work with Janet and others who may play (okay, right now it’s just me and her) and we’ll work up a protocol – including some instructions for the sound personnel.

Thanks for the feedback on the sound! I’ll be sure to pass it on to Joe – got the same feedback from those who told me about the confession too. Great stuff!!!

  3. I thought it was good but a little loud. Caleb was trying to tell me something and I could barely hear him. But I did love the sound of Salt n Light. Of course, we too sit up front! :)

  4. Sue beat me to it. During the confession, the music is fine if it is played softly and just chords. Having said that, the band was really good this week. I thought the sound was good as well. Of course, I am up front.
    Thanks for all you do.

  5. Eric- I appreciate the way you model requesting feedback. I love it when people keep singing even when they’re not “supposed to”. This happened at KINDLE last week, too. Tells me they’re into worship.
During the confession, I think playing chords, not melody line would be helpful. And quieter. When a melody line is played, I find myself singing the song in my head rather than focusing on the confession.
